STUDIO NOTES // Celebrating 9 years of Simon & Ruby

Sketchbook Jewelry | Modern Bohemian | Simon & Ruby

What started as a creative outlet, soon grew into a business and then took over my life… in the best way possible. If you asked me 9 years ago, when I first heard about Etsy, when I was working yet another retail management job, if this is where we’d be today? I would have laughed at you. But here we are and it’s been a crazy 9 years. In celebration of everything it has taken to get to where we are today, I thought we’d take a stroll down memory lane…

STUDIO NOTES: Show Love

abraham lincoln quote

I’ve been reading a lot of quotes from Abraham Lincoln lately and all I keep thinking is “wow.” It makes me reflect on presidents through history & how they’re revered. We’re served their finest moments and their stunning defeats in a bite sized morsel in history class, but think of all the bits that fall through the cracks. It’s easy to reflect on the past with rose colored glasses and romanticize their leadership, but it all comes down to one thing. During their time, there were people who loved them & there were people who hated them. They made mistakes and misspoke and failed. They succeeded in moving the country forward through time and creating amazing things that we have the luxury of taking for granted today. They fought wars and made hard decisions and sometimes cried at the end of the day. They had wins and joy and sometimes celebrated at the end of the day. But we don’t see all that.

STUDIO NOTES: Today

simon and ruby coastal

Today I felt uncertain.

If you combine the stress, anxiety, and fear that we have felt over the entire course of the election – that is some pretty powerful stuff. I had an idea of how I thought everything would go down and as last night went on, it seemed less and less likely. I woke to the official announcement of our new president and spent the morning trying to process and form my thoughts. Undoubtedly, I felt some anxiety when looking to the future. (But really, what’s new? The future can be a bit of a scary place.)

STUDIO NOTES: Adventure and Anxiety

Simon and Ruby travel adventure

I think we’re all living contradictions.

Some days the idea of adventure and exploration is what keeps me going – what gets me out of bed in the morning. And some days, the anxiety of even leaving the house can leave me feeling restless and unsettled. As I’ve gotten older, I find that not only am I more bold and confident in certain areas of my life, but I’m much more nervous in others.
